How Stripe fees work
Stripe's standard pricing in the United States is pay as you go. There is no monthly fee, no setup fee and no minimum. You pay a percentage of each successful payment plus a fixed amount, and two percentage-only surcharges apply in specific situations. This is the whole rate card for the things a small business actually uses.
| Fee | Rate | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Online card payment | 2.9% + 30¢ | Stripe standard US online card pricing, per successful charge. |
| International card | +1.5% | Added when the card was issued outside the United States. |
| Currency conversion | +1% | Added when the charge is in a currency other than the one your bank account settles in. |
| ACH Direct Debit | 0.8%, max $5.00 | US bank debit at standard settlement, capped at $5 per payment. |
| Dispute (chargeback) | $15.00 each | Charged when a dispute is received, whatever the outcome. |
| Refund | $0, fee not returned | The customer gets the full amount back; the original processing fee stays with Stripe. |

Stripe's international card and currency conversion fees
The headline rate is only the headline. Two more charges apply to a lot of cross-border business, and they stack. The international card surcharge of 1.5% is decided by where the card was issued, so a customer on holiday in New York paying with a card from Germany still counts as international. The currency conversion fee of 1% applies whenever the charge currency is not the currency your bank account settles in, on top of the exchange rate Stripe uses that day.
A $100 payment on a foreign card, converted, costs $5.70 instead of $3.20: an effective rate of 5.7% rather than 3.2%. Across a year of $20,000 in monthly sales that difference is about $6,000.
Which of the two you pay depends on what you can control. The card surcharge follows the customer, so a business selling worldwide will pay it on some share of its payments wherever the business is based. The conversion fee follows the account: charge in the currency your account settles in and it goes away.
Stripe fees for founders outside the US
If you sell to US customers from a Stripe account in another country, every one of those payments is cross-border from Stripe's point of view: the card is foreign to your account and the dollars have to be converted into your local currency. Your effective rate ends up near the 5.7% example above, not the 2.9% on the pricing page, and some countries are not supported by Stripe at all.
A US LLC with a US business bank account changes the arithmetic. Stripe sees a US business settling in US dollars, so a US customer's card is domestic and there is nothing to convert. You pay 2.9% + 30¢ and hold the dollars until you decide to move them. Customers abroad still trigger the international surcharge, because that follows the card, but the conversion fee is gone for everything priced in dollars.
It does not make the income tax-free. A foreign-owned single-member LLC must file Form 5472 every year, with a $25,000 penalty for missing it, and whether you owe US income tax depends on your own facts. Read US tax obligations for foreign-owned LLCs before you plan around the saving.
A $100 payment from a US customer
- Foreign Stripe account, converted $5.70
- PayPal, cross-border, converted $9.48
- PayPal, cross-border, kept in USD $5.48
- US LLC with a US Stripe account $3.20
PayPal at 3.5% + $0.49, international +1.5%, conversion 4%. Full comparison in the PayPal fee calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
On Stripe's standard US pricing, a successful online card payment costs 2.9% of the amount plus 30 cents. On a $100 payment that is $3.20, so $96.80 reaches your balance. There is no monthly fee and no setup fee on the standard plan.
What is the Stripe fee for international cards?
Stripe adds 1.5% when the card was issued outside the United States. If the payment also has to be converted into your settlement currency, a further 1% applies. A $100 payment on a foreign card with conversion therefore costs $5.70 instead of $3.20.
Does Stripe charge a currency conversion fee?
Yes. When the currency of the charge is different from the currency your bank account settles in, Stripe converts it and adds 1% on top of the exchange rate. Charging customers in the same currency your account settles in avoids it, which is one reason founders outside the US open a US business account and get paid in dollars.
How do I calculate what to charge so I receive a specific amount?
Add the fixed fee to the amount you want, then divide by one minus the percentage. To receive $500 on a domestic card payment: ($500 + $0.30) divided by (1 minus 0.029) is $515.24. Switch the calculator to "I want to receive" and it does this for you, including any surcharges you tick.
What does Stripe charge for ACH bank debits?
ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% of the payment, capped at $5.00. On a $2,000 invoice that is $5.00, against $58.30 on a card. The trade-off is time: ACH payments take up to four business days to settle and can be returned.
Are Stripe fees the same in every country?
No. Stripe sets pricing per account country. The numbers on this page are the standard rates for a United States account. An account in India, for example, pays 2% on domestic cards and 3% on international cards, with a 2% conversion charge. If your account is outside the US, check the pricing page for your country.
Can I use Stripe if I am not a US resident?
Stripe supports accounts in many countries, so you may be able to open one where you live. Founders in countries Stripe does not serve, or who want to be paid in US dollars without the international and conversion charges, form a US LLC and open a US Stripe account in the company name. The LLC needs a federal tax number and a US business bank account first.
Does Stripe charge for refunds and disputes?
A dispute costs $15.00 whether or not you win it. When you refund a payment, the customer gets the full amount back and Stripe does not return the original processing fee, so a refunded $100 card payment still costs you $3.20.
