Forming the LLC
Kansas LLCs are formed by filing a Articles of Organization with the Kansas Secretary of State, Business Services, which accepts filings online. The state charges a one-time fee to accept it; the fee is the same whether you file yourself or use a service, and StartGlobal includes it in the $399.
Keeping it active
Kansas LLCs file a Business Entity Information Report every two years. It is due by April 15, every two years: LLCs formed in an even-numbered year file in even years, LLCs formed in an odd-numbered year file in odd years. The first one is due by April 15 of the next even or odd year matching the formation year (for example, an LLC formed in 2026 first files by April 15, 2028).
You also need a registered agent in Kansas every year. Ours is included for the first year and $99 a year after; you can act as your own if you have a Kansas address and are there in business hours.
- Kansas moved from annual to biennial reports starting January 1, 2024; the report lists members owning 5% or more of the LLC's capital.
- Kansas does not grant extensions; an LLC that has not filed within 90 days after the due date is forfeited and must file a certificate of reinstatement.
- The resident agent must have a Kansas street address (not a P.O. box).
What a "$0" Kansas LLC costs over three years
Formation, a registered agent every year and an EIN, at each provider's published prices. The Kansas filing fee is added on top of theirs and included in ours.
| Three years | |
|---|---|
| ZenBusiness Starter Registered agent is a $199/yr add-on from day one. | $696 + Kansas filing fee |
| LegalZoom Basic Registered agent is $249/yr. | $826 + Kansas filing fee |
| Bizee Basic Registered agent free for year one, then $149/yr. | $368 + Kansas filing fee |
| StartGlobal State fee, first-year agent and EIN included. Agent $99/yr after. | $597, all in |
