Start your LLCWhat we handle
Extensions are part of the plan.
An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. We take care of the paperwork and the deadlines so you can focus on getting your return right.
Form 7004 and Form 4868
We file the right extension form for your LLC, whether you report as a partnership, corporation, or sole proprietor.
Six extra months to file
An approved extension moves your filing deadline back by six months, so you have time to prepare an accurate return.
Avoid late-filing penalties
Late filing can cost up to 25% of the tax due. We track your deadlines and file on time so you stay penalty-free.
Included in your plan
Extensions are handled as part of your $149/month plan. There is no separate fee and nothing extra to buy.
FAQ
Tax extension questions, answered.
What is an IRS tax extension?+
An IRS tax extension gives you additional time to file your tax return. It does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed. For LLCs, this means you get six extra months to prepare and submit your return without facing late-filing penalties. Extensions are filed using Form 7004 (for partnerships) or Form 4868 (for sole proprietors).
Which form does my LLC need?+
It depends on your LLC structure. Multi-member LLCs file Form 7004 to extend their Form 1065 partnership return. Single-member LLCs file Form 4868 to extend their Schedule C, which is part of the personal Form 1040. We review your LLC type and file the correct form automatically.
Is the extension automatic?+
Yes. IRS extensions are 100% automatic as long as the form is filed before the original deadline. You do not need to provide a reason or justification. Once filed, your extension is granted immediately.
When is the deadline to file an extension?+
Multi-member LLCs must file Form 7004 by March 15 to extend the Form 1065 deadline to September 15. Single-member LLCs must file Form 4868 by April 15 to extend the Schedule C deadline to October 15. These dates apply to calendar-year filers.
Does an extension give me more time to pay?+
No. This is the most common misconception. An extension gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay. If you owe taxes, estimated payments should still be made by the original deadline to avoid interest and late-payment penalties.
What happens if I miss the deadline without an extension?+
Late-filing penalties can be severe. For Form 1065 (multi-member LLCs), the penalty is $220 per partner per month, up to 12 months. For Schedule C, the failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. For Form 5472 (foreign-owned LLCs), the penalty is $25,000 per form. Filing an extension before the deadline eliminates these risks.
Do foreign-owned LLCs need a separate extension for Form 5472?+
No. Form 5472 is filed as part of the underlying tax return (Form 1065 or pro forma Form 1120). When you extend the underlying return, the Form 5472 deadline is automatically extended as well. Our extension filing covers this for you.
Can I file the extension myself?+
You can, but it requires knowing which form to file, using IRS-approved e-filing software, and submitting before the deadline. Many LLC owners, especially non-residents, prefer to have a professional handle it to avoid errors. Our service ensures the correct form is filed and accepted by the IRS.
How quickly does StartGlobal file my extension?+
We file your extension on the same business day you complete your purchase. You will receive an email confirmation once the IRS accepts your filing, typically within 24 hours.
What should I do after the extension is filed?+
After your extension is filed, you have six additional months to prepare and file your full tax return. We recommend using this time to organize your financial records and consider our Federal Tax Filing service, which includes cleanup bookkeeping, return preparation, and IRS e-filing.
