Checking a name before you commit

    1. The state register

A US LLC needs a name no other company in that state already uses. States decide "the same" differently; our business name checker applies each state's rules.

    2. Trademarks

A registered trademark in your category can force a rename later, even with a state-approved company name. Search the USPTO register before you print anything.

    3. The domain

The .com is worth having for a direct-to-consumer brand. If it is taken, a short modifier (get, shop, try) is common and fine.

Name patterns that work for online stores

Most memorable store names follow one of a handful of patterns. Invented words made from a real one (Candly, Waxio) are easy to trademark and usually have a free domain. Compounds (NovaCandle) read as a brand. Category names (Candle Supply Co) say what you sell and help search, but are harder to protect. Alliteration (Cozy Candle) sticks.

For example, "candle" in the modern style gives ideas like AeroCandle, VeroCandle, Candeo, NeoCandle, FluxCandle.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a store name?

Start from one or two words about what you sell or how you want customers to feel, then try them in different patterns: an invented word (Candly), a compound (NovaCandle), a category name (Candle Supply Co) or an alliteration (Cozy Candle). Shortlist the ones that are easy to say and spell, then check they are free.

How do I check if a business name is taken?

Check three places. The state business register, for an LLC with the same or a deceptively similar name. The USPTO trademark database, because a registered trademark can stop you using a name even if the state lets you register it. And a domain registrar, for the .com. Each name below links to all three.

Does registering an LLC protect my brand name?

Only within that state’s business register: no one else can form an LLC there with an indistinguishable name. It does not give you trademark rights nationally. For that, use the name in commerce and consider a federal trademark registration with the USPTO.

Should my store name match my LLC name?

It does not have to. Your LLC can have a plain legal name and trade under a brand, either by registering a DBA (assumed name) or by noting it on platforms and bank accounts. Many sellers run several store brands from one LLC.

What makes a good brand name for an online store?

Short (two syllables is ideal), easy to spell after hearing it once, available as a .com or a close variant, not too narrow to grow beyond your first product, and clear of existing trademarks in your category.
