Managing Transactions
Overview
The Transactions tab lets you review, categorize, and confirm your business transactions. Transactions are organized into Non Categorised and Categorised sections, and a progress indicator shows how many still need your attention. Keeping your transactions categorized ensures accurate bookkeeping and timely tax filings.
Before You Begin
- You must have an active StartGlobal account with a registered company.
- Your transactions should be available either through a connected bank account (via Plaid) or manual import.
- Navigate to Accounting in your dashboard sidebar.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Open the Transactions tab.
What to do: Click Accounting in the sidebar, then select the Transactions tab.
What you will seeTwo sections: Non Categorised (transactions awaiting your review) and Categorised (transactions you have already confirmed). A progress indicator displays "X uncategorized / Y total".

Select the correct year.
What to do: Use the year selector at the top of the page to choose the tax year you want to work on.
What you will seeThe transaction list refreshes to show transactions for the selected year.

Filter transactions (optional).
What to do: Use the available filters to narrow down the list by month, direction (income or expense), or source/merchant.
What you will seeThe transaction list updates to show only transactions matching your selected filters.

Open a transaction for review.
What to do: Click on any transaction row in the Non Categorised section.
What you will seeA transaction detail sheet slides open displaying the transaction amount, transaction ID, description, and editable fields.

Categorize the transaction.
What to do: In the detail sheet, select the appropriate category from the category selection dropdown.
What you will seeThe category is applied to the transaction. Categories are organized to match common business expense and income types.

Add notes and upload a receipt (optional).
What to do: Enter any relevant notes (up to 500 characters) in the notes field. Upload a receipt if you have one.
What you will seeYour notes appear in the notes field, and any uploaded receipt shows as a thumbnail or filename.

Ask your bookkeeper a question (optional).
What to do: If you are unsure how to categorize the transaction, use the bookkeeper questions field to ask for guidance.
What you will seeYour question is saved and will be visible to your bookkeeper for follow-up.

Confirm the transaction.
What to do: Click the CONFIRM button at the bottom of the detail sheet.
What you will seeA toast notification appears: "Transactions have been confirmed." The transaction moves from the Non Categorised section to the Categorised section. The progress indicator updates.

Discard a transaction (if applicable).
What to do: If a transaction is not relevant to your business, use the discard option in the detail sheet.
What you will seeA toast notification appears: "Transaction has been discarded." The transaction is removed from the uncategorized list.
What Happens Next
- As you categorize and confirm transactions, the progress indicator updates to reflect your progress.
- Once all transactions are categorized, your bookkeeper can finalize your books for the period.
- This directly supports your federal tax filing timeline by ensuring your financial data is complete and accurate.
