Completing Company Information

6 min read Updated Jun 1, 2025

Overview

The company information step is the first form in the LLC formation flow. Here you provide the essential details about your new LLC, including your preferred business name, effective date, industry, website, and a brief description of your business activities. This information will be used to file your formation documents with the state.

Before You Begin

Before You Begin
  • You must have completed payment for your formation package.
  • Have your preferred LLC name ready (along with an alternate name as a backup).
  • Know your business industry and be prepared to write a short description of your business activities.
  • Have your business website URL ready (this is required for banking verification purposes).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Read the welcome screen and begin.

On the welcome stage, review the list of information you will need, then click the "LET'S GO" button.

    What you will see

A welcome screen titled "Let's Form Your LLC" with a subtitle stating you will need about 15 minutes. It lists required information: business name, member details, ownership percentages, business purpose, Responsible Party ID, and IDs of all owners. An alert reminds you to have all documents ready before proceeding.

  2. Enter your preferred LLC name.

In the Preferred Name of LLC field, type the name you want for your company. Do not include "LLC" -- it is added automatically.

    What you will see

A text input field with the placeholder "ABC" and an "LLC" suffix displayed to the right of the field. The page title reads "Let's setup your LLC in [StateName]."

  3. Set the effective date (optional).

If you want your LLC to have a specific formation date, click the Effective Date field and select a date. Leave it blank to use the filing date as the effective date.

    Tip

If you select a date in December, the system may suggest using January 1 of the following year for tax optimization purposes, with a "Use January 1, [NextYear]" option you can click.

  4. Enter an alternate LLC name.

Type a backup name in the Alternate Name field. This name will be used if your preferred name is already taken or rejected by the state.

    What you will see

A required text input field with an "LLC" suffix, similar to the preferred name field.

  5. Select your industry.

Click the Industry dropdown and search for or scroll to your business industry. Select the most appropriate option.

    What you will see

A searchable dropdown list of industry categories. You can type to filter the list.

  6. Enter your website.

Type your business website URL in the Website field.

    What you will see

A required text input field with a note explaining that the website is needed for banking verification purposes.

  7. Write your business description.

In the Description field, write a brief description of your business activities. Keep it concise and within the character limit.

    What you will see

A text area with a maximum of 150 characters. A character counter shows how many characters you have used.

  8. Continue to the next step.

Click the "Continue" button. If you need to go back, click "Go Back".

    What you will see

If all required fields are filled in correctly, you will advance to the Responsible Party step. If any fields are missing or invalid, error messages will appear next to the relevant fields.

What Happens Next

  • You will proceed to the Responsible Party step, where you provide details about the person who will serve as the legal compliance contact for your LLC.
  • Your company information is saved and can be reviewed later in the Review step before final submission.
