How Wise fees work
Wise charges at two points. Money coming in: domestic US payments to your USD account details are free; an international USD wire over SWIFT costs $6.11. Money going out to another currency: a percentage plus a fixed fee that depend on the currency, at the mid-market rate. Holding balances is free.
That structure is the opposite of PayPal's. PayPal is a payment processor that charges a high percentage on every payment and again to convert; Wise charges almost nothing to move money but cannot take a card payment. Freelancers and agencies paid by bank transfer use Wise; businesses that need a checkout use Stripe and move the payouts through Wise or a US bank.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Wise charge to receive US dollars?
Receiving domestic US payments (ACH and domestic wires) into Wise USD account details is free. Receiving a USD wire sent over SWIFT costs $6.11 per payment. Opening a Wise Business account has a one-time fee of $31.
What is the Wise conversion fee?
A percentage that depends on the currency, plus a small fixed fee, at the mid-market exchange rate with no markup. Converting US dollars to Indian rupees was 0.42% plus $0.56 when we checked; to euros 0.29%. The cheapest corridors were AUD, CAD, EUR, the dearest MAD, PEN, ARS.
Is Wise cheaper than PayPal for international payments?
For moving money, by a wide margin. $1,000 converted to rupees costs about $4.76 with Wise. The same $1,000 received from a foreign customer through PayPal and converted costs about $90.39 on PayPal's published rates. The catch is that Wise is not a payment processor: a client has to send a bank transfer, you cannot take card payments into Wise.
Does Wise use the real exchange rate?
Yes. Wise converts at the mid-market rate, the one you see on Google or Reuters, and shows its fee separately. Banks and PayPal usually build their margin into a worse exchange rate instead, which makes them look cheaper than they are.
Can a US LLC open a Wise Business account?
Yes. A US LLC owned by a non-US founder can open Wise Business with its formation documents and EIN, and get US account and routing numbers for receiving ACH and wires. Many founders use it alongside a US bank account such as Mercury rather than instead of one.
