    Worked example

The calculator's starting values, a $29.99 item with $0.00 shipping, costing you $7.00 to make or buy:

    Buyer pays (incl. tax)$29.99
    Referral fee (15%, min $0.30)-$4.50
    FBA fulfilment fee-$4.50
    Total fees$9.00 (30.01%)
    Profit after costs$13.86 (46.21%)

The fees Amazon charges a seller

Referral fee: a percentage of the sale price, including any shipping the buyer pays, with a minimum of $0.30 per item. It is 15% in most categories and 8% for consumer electronics, computers and full-size appliances; a few categories use tiers by price.

FBA fulfilment fee: if Amazon stores, picks, packs and ships your product, a flat fee per unit set by the product’s size and weight tier. Seller Central shows the exact fee for each ASIN; enter it in the calculator. Monthly storage, inbound placement and low-inventory fees come on top and depend on your stock levels.

Selling plan: the Professional plan is $39.99 a month whatever you sell. The Individual plan has no monthly fee but charges $0.99 per item sold, so Professional is cheaper once you sell more than about 40 units a month.

What a healthy FBA margin looks like

Many FBA sellers aim to land cost of goods at no more than a quarter to a third of the selling price, because referral and fulfilment fees together often take 30% to 40% of it before advertising. Run your numbers with realistic advertising spend before committing to an order.

Low-priced items are hit hardest: the fulfilment fee is a fixed amount, so on a $10 product it can be 30% of the price on its own.

Selling on Amazon.com from outside the US

Amazon lets sellers from most countries open an Amazon.com account, but payouts to a non-US bank go through a currency conversion, and identity and tax verification take longer. US marketplace sellers are also asked for a tax interview, which for a non-US person is a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E.

Sellers who form a US LLC can register the account to the company, connect a US bank account and be paid in dollars. A single-member LLC owned by a non-US person still completes the owner’s W-8BEN in Amazon’s tax interview, because the LLC is disregarded for US tax.

Sell as a US business, paid in dollars

Form your US LLC for $399 with all state fees included, get a federal tax number and a US business bank account, and register your seller account to the company.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon take per sale?

A referral fee of 15% in most categories (8% in some electronics categories), with a $0.30 minimum, plus the FBA fulfilment fee if Amazon ships the order, plus the $39.99 monthly Professional plan or $0.99 per item on the Individual plan.

How do I find my exact FBA fee?

Use the Revenue Calculator in Seller Central or the fee preview on the product listing. FBA fees are set by size tier and shipping weight, which only Amazon’s measurements decide; enter the figure it gives you in this calculator.

Is the referral fee charged on shipping?

Yes, on the total sales price including any shipping or gift wrap the buyer pays. On FBA orders shipping is usually free to the buyer, so the fee is on the item price.

    Professional or Individual plan?

Professional costs $39.99 a month; Individual costs $0.99 per item sold. Above about 40 units a month Professional is cheaper, and it is required for most advertising and for many categories.

What other Amazon fees should I budget for?

Monthly inventory storage (higher from October to December), aged inventory surcharges, inbound placement fees, returns processing in some categories, and advertising. None of these are per-sale, so they are not in the per-unit result above.
