The calculator's starting values, a $50.00 item with $8.00 shipping and 7% sales tax, costing you $18.00 to make or buy and $7.00 to post:
| Buyer pays (incl. tax) | $62.06 |

| Per-order fee | -$0.40 |
| Total fees | $8.84 (15.24%) |
| Profit after costs | $24.16 (41.65%) |
How eBay fees are calculated
eBay's main charge is the final value fee, a percentage of the total amount of the sale. In most categories it is 13.6% on up to $7,500 per item and 2.35% on anything above that. Books, DVDs and music are 14.95%; most consumer electronics are 9% up to $2,500.
The part people miss is the base. "Total amount of the sale" means the item price plus the shipping the buyer pays plus the sales tax eBay collects on the buyer's behalf. So a $50 item with $8 shipping in a state with 7% sales tax is charged on $62.06, not $50.
On top of that comes a per-order fee of $0.40, or $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less, and a 1.65% international fee when the buyer's address or the delivery address is outside the US. Listing is free for most sellers up to their monthly allowance.
How to lower your eBay fees
An eBay Store subscription lowers the final value fee in many categories, and the larger store tiers come with more free listings. Whether it pays depends on volume: work out your monthly fees here first, then compare the store saving against the subscription.
Ship internationally through eBay International Shipping rather than directly and eBay does not charge the international fee on eligible listings. Promoted Listings are a separate advertising fee on top of everything here and are worth measuring against the sales they actually bring.
Selling on eBay.com from outside the US
A seller registered outside the US who sells on eBay.com pays the rate card of their own registration country, and usually an international fee on sales to US buyers, then a currency conversion when eBay pays out in local currency.
Sellers who form a US company and register it on eBay.com with a US bank account are paid in dollars and treated as a US seller, so domestic sales carry no international fee. That changes the paperwork too: the company needs a federal tax number and files US returns every year.
Sell as a US business, paid in dollars
Form your US LLC for $399 with all state fees included, get a federal tax number and a US business bank account, and register your seller account to the company.
Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take from a sale?
In most categories 13.6% of the total the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax, plus a $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10. On a $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% sales tax that is about $8.84, roughly 15% of the $58 you actually receive before tax.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping the buyer pays. Offering free shipping and raising the item price by the same amount costs the same in fees.
Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?
Yes. Since 2021 the final value fee is calculated on the total including the sales tax eBay collects and remits for the buyer, even though that tax is not your money.
What is the eBay international fee?
1.65% of the total for a US seller when the buyer's registered address or the delivery address is outside the US. It is not charged when you use eBay International Shipping on an eligible listing.
What is the eBay per-order fee?
$0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 on orders above that, charged once per order whatever the number of items.
Are eBay fees different by category?
Yes. Most categories are 13.6%, books and media 14.95%, and most consumer electronics 9%. Some categories, such as sneakers and handbags over a set price, have their own rates; check eBay's fee page for those.
