    Worked example

The calculator's starting values, a $35.00 item with $5.00 shipping and 7% sales tax, costing you $9.00 to make or buy and $5.00 to post:

    Buyer pays (incl. tax)$42.80
    Listing fee-$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5% of price and shipping)-$2.60
    Payment processing (3% + $0.25)-$1.53
    Total fees$4.33 (10.84%)
    Profit after costs$21.67 (54.17%)

    Every Etsy fee, explained

Listing fee: $0.20 per listing, renewed every four months or each time the item sells. A listing with ten in stock that sells three times costs $0.60 in renewals.

Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge. Sales tax is not included in this one.

Payment processing: 3% plus $0.25 for a US shop using Etsy Payments, charged on the total the buyer pays, including sales tax. Rates differ for shops in other countries.

Offsite Ads: when Etsy's own advertising on Google, Facebook or Instagram brings the buyer, you pay 15% of the order (12% once your shop has passed $10,000 in sales in a year), capped at $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; above it, participation is required.

Pricing so the fees do not eat the margin

Without Offsite Ads, Etsy fees on a typical $30 to $50 order land around 10% to 12% of what the buyer pays. With an attributed Offsite Ad they can pass 25%. Price for the worst case on items that sell through ads, or at least know which orders you can absorb it on.

Because the transaction fee covers shipping, there is no fee advantage in moving cost from the item price into shipping or back. Set shipping to what postage actually costs and keep the price honest.

Etsy fees for sellers outside the US

Payment processing rates, and in some countries an extra regulatory operating fee, depend on the country of your bank account. Sellers in most countries are also paid in their local currency after a conversion that Etsy prices into the payout.

Some sellers form a US company with a US bank account so their Etsy shop is a US shop, paid in dollars at US processing rates. It is a real company with real annual filings, so it pays off at volume rather than for a hobby shop.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US shop: $0.20 listing, 6.5% of price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 of the total with tax. On a $35 item with $5 shipping that is about $4.33, or about 10.8% of the $40 you charge.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the processing fee both include the shipping you charge.

What is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?

15% of an order that Etsy's ads brought in, or 12% for shops that have made over $10,000 in a year, capped at $100 per order. You only pay it on orders the ads are credited with, within 30 days of the ad click.

Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?

Yes, while your shop has made under $10,000 in the past 365 days. Once it passes that, Offsite Ads are mandatory at the lower rate.

Does Etsy charge a monthly fee?

No, unless you choose Etsy Plus, an optional monthly subscription with listing credits and shop customisation. The standard account has no monthly fee.

When does the Etsy listing fee get charged?

When you publish the listing, again every four months if it is still active, and again each time it sells and auto-renews. Every renewal is $0.20.
