Check your name against Utah law before you file. The state's search tells you whether a name exists. It does not tell you whether yours is legal, or whether it is too close to one already on the register. This does both.
What this does not check

- • Trademarks. A name can be free on the state register and still infringe a federal or common law mark.
- • Domain and social handle availability.
- • Whether the name is available in any other state you later register in.
Utah LLC naming rules
Utah Code § 48-3a-108 and Utah Code § 48-3a-108(4), (5)
Your name must include one of
- Limited Liability Company
- Limited Company
- L.L.C.
- LLC
- L.C.
- LC
- Ltd. Co.
- Limited Co.
- Ltd. Company
Your name must not
- • "Association", "corporation", "incorporated", "partnership", "limited partnership" or "L.P."
- • Any word or abbreviation of like import to those
- • Anything implying the company is an agency of Utah or one of its political subdivisions when it is not
- • The number sequence "911", for any company formed or renamed on or after May 4, 2022
Words that need another regulator's approval
These are not banned. They need written consent from the body named, obtained before you file.

When is a name too close to one already registered?
This is what catches most filings. Utah compares your name against what is already on the register, and a difference that looks obvious to you may not count.
These do not make a name different
- • Any entity type term or its abbreviation: corp., corporation, Inc., incorporated, professional corporation, P.C., professional association, P.A., professional limited liability company, PLLC, company, limited partnership, limited, L.P., Ltd., limited liability company, limited company, L.C., L.L.C., registered limited liability partnership, RLLP, limited liability partnership, LLP, limited liability limited partnership, LLLP, registered limited liability limited partnership, RLLLP
- • The presence or absence of the words, or the symbols for the words, "the", "and", "a" or "plus"
- • Differences in punctuation and special characters
- • Differences in capitalisation
- • Differences between singular and plural forms of words, for companies formed or registered in Utah on or after May 4, 1998
These do
- • A name is distinguishable if it contains one or more different words, letters or numerals from the names already on the Division’s records
Names Utah will accept with the other company's consent
- • The holder of the conflicting name consents in writing and submits an undertaking, in a form satisfactory to the Division, to change their own name to one that is distinguishable
- • Or you deliver a certified copy of a final court judgment establishing your right to the name in Utah
Our comparison cannot judge: Repeated or dropped letters. Texas treats "Texxas Strong" as the same name as "Texas Strong". Words that sound alike. Texas treats "Xpress Auto" as the same as "Express Auto". Words that mean the same thing in another language, where the state translates them. Anything the filing officer decides at their own discretion, which every state reserves.
Searching the official register
- • Utah compares against trade names, trademarks and service marks registered with the Division as well as entity names
- • Note the cut-off dates. The singular and plural rule applies only to companies formed or registered from May 4, 1998, and the "911" prohibition only from May 4, 2022, so older names on the register may not follow the current rules
- • We have not published a direct link to the Division’s business search because their site would not serve us when we checked, and we only publish a link once we have loaded it ourselves
Exceptions worth knowing
- • Approval of a name gives you no exclusive right to geographic or generic terms inside it, and does not limit the law of unfair competition or trademark rights

How do I search Utah business entity names?
Utah Department of Commerce runs the official register. Search there for the exact name you want. Before you do, use the checker above to confirm the name satisfies Utah Code § 48-3a-108, because a name can be unused and still be refused for breaking the naming rules.
What must a Utah LLC name contain?

Can I use a name that is already taken in Utah?
Sometimes. The holder of the conflicting name consents in writing and submits an undertaking, in a form satisfactory to the Division, to change their own name to one that is distinguishable The consent has to be filed with your formation document.
Does a name search reserve or protect my Utah name?
No. A search tells you what is on the register at that moment. It is not an approval, and it gives you no rights in the name. Availability is finally determined only when your formation document is reviewed.
